The Nordic Retreat

A premium off-grid tiny house designed for extreme climates, blending steel-frame durability with Scandinavian minimalism.

The Nordic Retreat

Project Overview

The Nordic Retreat was designed as a sanctuary for those seeking to disconnect without sacrificing modern comforts. Located in the rugged terrain of British Columbia, this 450 sq ft tiny house serves as a flagship model for our High-Performance Small Living line.

The challenge was to create a structure capable of withstanding heavy snow loads while maintaining a lightweight profile for potential relocation.

Technical Specifications

To achieve the perfect balance between weight and strength, we utilized a Light Gauge Steel (LGS) framing system. This allowed for precision engineering and a 40% reduction in assembly time compared to traditional wood framing.

  • Structure: Galvanized Steel Frame (Hurricane Rated).
  • Insulation: High-density spray foam (R-32 Value).
  • Exterior: Charred Cedar (Shou Sugi Ban) and Matte Black Standing Seam Metal.
  • Energy: 4.5kW Solar Array with Battery Storage.

Interior Architecture

The interior follows a minimalist Scandinavian aesthetic. Every square inch is optimized for functionality:

  1. Dual Loft System: A primary master suite accessible via storage-integrated stairs and a secondary guest/lounge loft.
  2. Smart Kitchen: Custom-built cabinetry featuring a hide-away induction cooktop and a compact dishwasher.
  3. Panoramic Views: Large, argon-filled triple-pane windows that provide an immersive experience with the surrounding nature while ensuring maximum thermal efficiency.

Sustainability Impact

As part of our commitment to eco-friendly construction, the Nordic Retreat features a closed-loop water filtration system and a composting toilet. By choosing steel over wood, we’ve utilized 60% recycled materials for the structural skeleton, ensuring that the home is not only beautiful but also kind to the planet.
