Project Overview

The Obsidian Cabin

A sleek, black-clad modular retreat featuring floor-to-ceiling glass and high-efficiency thermal insulation for year-round mountain living.

The Obsidian Cabin

Concept & Design

The Obsidian Cabin is a masterclass in modern modular architecture. Designed as a high-end weekend getaway, it challenges the traditional “log cabin” aesthetic with sharp lines, dark textures, and an aggressive connection to the landscape.

The structure is composed of two primary modules that were pre-fabricated in a controlled factory environment and transported to the site, minimizing environmental impact on the sensitive mountain ecosystem.

Modular Engineering

The core of the Obsidian project is its Hybrid Modular System. By combining a heavy-duty steel chassis with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), we achieved an airtight envelope that outperforms traditional builds in extreme temperature fluctuations.

  • Assembly Time: 3 days on-site (after factory fabrication).
  • Cladding: High-performance matte black metal siding with anti-corrosive coating.
  • Glazing: Floor-to-ceiling tempered glass with Low-E coating to prevent heat gain.
  • Foundation: Steel screw piles, eliminating the need for invasive concrete pouring.

Living Area

The Interior Experience

Inside, the cabin features an open-concept layout that maximizes the 850 sq ft footprint. The use of dark-stained oak and polished concrete floors creates a sophisticated atmosphere that complements the exterior.

  1. The Great Room: A seamless transition between the kitchen and living area, anchored by a suspended wood-burning fireplace.
  2. Master Wing: A private suite featuring a walk-in rain shower and private deck access.
  3. Smart Climate: Integrated Nest thermostat system paired with radiant floor heating for maximum comfort during winter months.

Off-Grid Readiness

While the Obsidian Cabin is connected to the local grid, it features a redundant Tesla Powerwall system and rainwater harvesting tanks hidden beneath the main deck. This ensures that the retreat remains fully functional even during extreme weather events or power outages.
